As of 1 April 2026, this grace period has been abolished entirely.
If your visa expires and you have not applied for an extension or departed Zimbabwe before the expiry date, you will be considered to be overstaying immediately — with no grace period whatsoever. A USD $100 penalty applies from the first day of overstay.
The removal of the grace period is consistent with a broader pattern of tightening that Zimbabwe's immigration system has undergone since 2025, including the abolition of the Provisional Restrictive Notice (PRN) for permit holders. The message from the Department of Immigration is clear: compliance with visa conditions is now expected to be exact, not approximate.

1. Plan for a Maximum 30-Day Stay
Visitors are now strongly advised to structure their trips to fit within the initial 30-day visa period. Do not factor in the possibility of an extension when booking travel. Assume your visa will expire on the date stamped in your passport and plan accordingly.
2. Apply for Extensions Early — Not at the Last Minute
If there is a genuine reason you need additional time in Zimbabwe, apply for a visa extension with as much lead time as possible — ideally at least 5 to 7 days before your visa expires. Do not wait until the final 24–48 hours. Immigration offices can be busy, processing can take time, and any delay on your side leaves no room for error.
3. Book a Return Ticket Before You Arrive
Immigration officials at Zimbabwe's ports of entry are increasingly scrutinising travellers who cannot demonstrate a clear intention to leave. When you enter Zimbabwe, you should have:
- A confirmed return or onward air ticket booked within your 30-day visa period
- A clear, credible reason for your visit
- Sufficient funds to cover your stay
Travellers who enter without a confirmed return booking may face heightened scrutiny and, in some cases, refusal of entry.
4. Avoid Overstaying at All Costs
Even a single day of overstay now results in an automatic USD $100 fine — payable before you can depart Zimbabwe. There is no negotiation, no waiver, and no grace. Beyond the financial penalty, an overstay record can affect your ability to obtain future Zimbabwe visas and may complicate entry at the port of departure.
